You’ll see a code on the sidewall like 225/45 R17 94W. Read it left-to-right:

225 – tyre width in millimetres.
45 – aspect ratio: sidewall height as a % of the width (here, 45% of 225 mm).
R – construction type: Radial (almost all modern tyres are radial).
17 – rim diameter in inches (the wheel size).
94 – load index: how much weight each tyre can carry.
W – speed rating: the maximum safe speed for the tyre.

Tip: the first three parts (225/45 R17) are the most important for getting the right fit. Load and speed should match or exceed your vehicle’s handbook.
